
Angela Sorbo

Angela Sorbo, who graduated cum laude in Chemistry, is a senior scientist at the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS), Department of Food Safety, Nutrition and Veterinary Public Health (SANV), in Rome Her expertise includes analytical chemistry, proficiency testing for trace elements in food, and food safety, with a particular focus on environmental and industrial contaminants.
She currently serves as the Operational Manager of the SANV-ISS Functional Unit for Proficiency Testing, accredited according to ISO/IEC 17043 with flexible scope. Angela is the Director of the Italian National Reference Laboratory for Metals and Nitrogenous Compounds in Food and she also coordinates the activities of the Italian laboratories responsible for official analyses of processing contaminants in food.
Angela plays an active role in institutional activities related to official food control. She serves as a technical consultant to the Italian Ministry of Health on matters involving metals and processing contaminants. Her responsibilities include contributing to the development of national control and monitoring plans, evaluating the quality of monitoring data, and assessing human exposure to chemical contaminants within her field of expertise.
She represents the Italian Competent Authority as a national delegate to the European Commission’s Working Group on Environmental and Industrial Contaminants in Food (DG SANTE). Additionally, she is a member of CEN/TC 275 WG 10, which focuses on horizontal analytical methods for the determination of elements and their chemical species in food.
